This article breaks down what the numbers 24, 48, 60 and 120 fps actually mean, how HFR differs from familiar cinema, and why the industry never fully adopted high frame rate.

What FPS is
FPS stands for "frames per second" — the number of separate images that replace one another each second during playback. The higher the frame rate, the smoother motion looks on screen.
The reference points a viewer runs into:
- 24fps — the narrative-cinema standard since the 1920s.
- 25/30fps — the TV standard (PAL/NTSC).
- 48fps — the HFR rate Peter Jackson used for the Hobbit trilogy.
- 60fps — sports broadcasts, documentaries, YouTube.
- 120fps — Ang Lee's experimental projects (Billy Lynn, Gemini Man).
Why cinema chose 24 frames per second
The 24fps standard settled in the late 1920s as a compromise between film-stock cost and the minimum acceptable smoothness of motion with a synchronized soundtrack. Ever since, it has stuck as the visual "language" of narrative film: audiences associate 24fps with "cinema," and higher rates with TV, sports or home video.
An important detail: 24fps films are shot with a shutter speed of about 1/48s (the 180° rule). This produces natural motion blur, which the brain reads as smooth movement rather than a series of discrete frames. Raise the frame rate to 48–60 and above and that blur shrinks, so the image looks noticeably "sharper" and more "TV-like."
How HFR differs from 24fps
HFR (High Frame Rate) means shooting and projecting a film well above 24fps — usually 48, 60 or 120 frames per second. The main differences you'll notice while watching:
- Smoother motion. Pans, chases and action scenes look continuous, without the characteristic judder that fast camera movement produces at 24fps.
- Sharper motion detail. Moving objects retain their detail — especially valued in documentaries, nature footage and sports broadcasts.
- Less strobing. At 24fps a fast horizontal pan produces a "flickering" effect because the brain can't integrate the motion between frames. HFR removes this.
- The "soap opera effect." The downside of smoothness: at high frame rates the familiar cinematic blur disappears, and to many viewers the image starts to look like a TV news broadcast or a cheap series. This is the main criticism of HFR in narrative film.
Native HFR vs interpolation
It's worth distinguishing two fundamentally different cases:
- Real HFR. The film is shot with a high-frame-rate camera and shown in that same mode — like Jackson's Hobbit (48fps) or Ang Lee's Gemini Man (120fps). This is a deliberate directorial choice.
- Interpolation (motion smoothing). The source film is shot at 24fps, but software or your TV artificially builds in-between frames to reach 60 or 120fps. On modern TVs this feature is often on by default and goes by various names: TruMotion (LG), Motion Plus (Samsung), MotionFlow (Sony).
Interpolation is not equivalent to shooting in HFR: the algorithm guesses the in-between frames and often creates artifacts — "broken" faces in fast motion, halos around objects, a loss of cinematic feel. Many directors urge viewers to switch this feature off when watching narrative films at home.
Playback device requirements
To comfortably watch video at 60fps and up, a device needs to meet a few requirements:
- A refresh rate of at least 60Hz, and ideally 120Hz for 120fps content. Most modern phones, laptops and TVs meet this.
- Support for the target resolution. For Full HD 60fps, almost any modern device; for 4K 60fps, a TV or monitor with HDMI 2.0 or higher.
- Enough CPU and GPU power. Decoding 4K 60fps in HEVC (H.265) or AV1 needs hardware acceleration — on older processors without it, video will stutter.
- An up-to-date player. On PC — VLC, MPV or mpc-hc with recent codecs; on mobile — the built-in players of current iOS and Android.

Films shot at high frame rates

Ang Lee's experiments deserve a special mention: Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and Gemini Man were shot in 4K, 120fps and 3D all at once. That combination required specially equipped theaters — only a handful worldwide — which largely determined the commercial fate of both films.
For Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), Cameron introduced a new trick against the soap opera effect. The entire film is projected in a 48fps container, but true HFR is used only in roughly 40% of the runtime — the underwater and flying scenes, where the "hyperclarity" of stereo 3D matters most. The rest, mainly dialogue, is motion-graded: blur is deliberately reintroduced so it reads like conventional 24fps. In effect, Cameron uses the high frame rate not for smoothness per se, but as a tool to sharpen depth in 3D.
Why HFR never became the standard
Despite years of attempts, HFR never displaced the classic 24fps in narrative cinema. The main reasons:
- The "TV" perception. Viewers widely complained that The Hobbit at 48fps looked like a TV series or behind-the-scenes footage from the set, rather than a film.
- Harsher demands on production. At 48–120fps, sets, makeup, wigs and extras become noticeable — the things natural 24fps blur hides. That sharply raises the cost and complexity of a production.
- Limited infrastructure. Theaters equipped for 4K, 120fps and 3D simultaneously number only a handful worldwide. Mass distribution of HFR versions is physically impossible.
- James Cameron changed his approach. In Avatar: The Way of Water he abandoned the idea of shooting the whole film in HFR, using the high frame rate only in select dynamic scenes — an indirect admission that 24fps remains the baseline language of storytelling.
HFR retains its niche in documentaries, nature footage, sports broadcasts and VR content — anywhere maximum smoothness matters and the "cinematic" quality of blur is irrelevant. Bottom line
60fps and HFR in general aren't an "improved" version of ordinary cinema — they're a different visual language. It delivers unmatched smoothness and motion sharpness but strips the image of its familiar "film" aesthetic. For documentaries, sports and nature footage that's a plus; for narrative cinema it's a debate the industry has been having for over a decade.
