  • Don't forget audio. The audio track is part of your total bitrate: 128–160 kbps AAC is plenty for voice, 256–320 for music-heavy content.

How much upload a broadcast needs

Your upload needs to comfortably exceed the stream's total bitrate (video + audio). Rule of thumb: use no more than 50–75% of your real upload speed to leave room for network variance.

Key points:

  • Your ISP advertises peak upload; a stream needs sustained upload. A cable line showing "15 Mbps peak" may deliver a real 8–10 Mbps in the evening when neighbors on the same node are active. Test your upload at different times of day.
  • Only upload counts. Download is irrelevant to streaming — the data goes "from you."
  • Symmetric fiber is the best setup for regular streamers: equal download and upload speed.
  • Multistreaming. If you broadcast to several platforms directly from OBS, upload is multiplied by the number of destinations. Cloud multistream (one upload, the service fans out) saves your bandwidth.

  2. Lower the frame rate. Dropping 60fps to 30fps cuts the required bitrate significantly and barely hurts talking-head content.
  3. Lower the resolution. 936p or 720p 60fps looks better than a "crumbling" 1080p when you're short on bitrate.
  4. Switch codecs. HEVC or AV1 give the same quality at a lower bitrate if your hardware supports them.
  5. Go wired. Ethernet is steadier than Wi-Fi — critical for streaming.
